Unity Through Sportsmanship
How do sports and Jesus have anything to do with each other? "Does God care about who wins games?" is a common follow-up to this one, and "How does praying during a game benefit an athlete?". We believe that God can use anyone, regardless of their position, to bring honor to his name. Since we are commanded to do everything in the name of Jesus in Colossians 3:17, we should take this to heart and carry out our duties as Christians by doing everything we do in Jesus' name and giving thanks to God the Father through him. Moreover, by doing so, we are expressing our gratitude and reverence to the one who has bestowed us with this gift in the first place. Whatever you do, this is what you're supposed to do. So, the idea of "In Jesus' name I play" isn't just for athletes or sports fans. You have the option of doing anything for the glory of God rather than for the approval of others or your own personal glory. Everyone, regardless of their occupation or status in life—athletes and teachers and doctors and lawyers and garbage collectors and full-time mothers and fathers—is entitled to the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. You can give God the glory by doing your job to the best of your ability and in a way that pleases him.
